The other day my Hubby, son & I took a day trip to Centralia, PA. What? You’ve never heard of it? Perhaps that is because it is a modern day ghost town who had their zip code revoked in 2002. Or the fact that in 2010 had a population of 10.
Centralia is an old mining town that has had a fire burning beneath it for years. Eminent domain was claimed by Pennsylvania in 1992 forcing everyone to leave their homes. There are still those few stragglers who refuse to move. It is very interesting to see how well groomed the few properties still occupied are. I’ve seen so much worse in populated areas. Even in the middle of nothing you can find well groomed fields. The cemetery was immaculately groomed.
My Hubby has read about it so much that he just had to go and see it for himself. There are websites, books, films and songs about Centralia.
If you are looking to do some walking around and not trying to entertain small children, this may be for you. If you enjoy nature & history, again, for you. Don’t go there hungry, wanting to shop or needing to pee. You will be out of luck.
We saw a lot of butterflies & grasshoppers. There is a nearby wind farm that was interesting to see. We also took a walk down the condemned highway that has been ruined by the fires below. We did not add to the graffiti, we did take photos of it. My favorite was the phrase “Be kind whenever possible”. Oh then there as a stop sign I liked too. Can never get enough Journey LOL. My Hubby & Son were really interested in the time capsule that is waiting to be opened in 2016. They would like to be there when it happens. If we are there, I’ll post about it after… can you wait that long?
Have you ever heard of Centralia, PA before this post?

“Don’t go there hungry, wanting to shop, or needing to pee”…hmmm, looks like 2 strikes for me, who really needs to pee anyways right? But hunger and shopping, I cannot do without, lol
We were so hungry by the time we were on our way home! Yet what did we do?? Wait until we were 5 minutes from our house to actually stop and eat. The no shopping thing really doesn’t work for me!
